Games .. practice the Ring on your PC

There are several games on the PC which have the Nordschleife circuit, many not as standard but the track can be downloaded.

The ever popular Grand Prix Legends comes with the 1967 circuit, which includes the South Curve and the old pits. A 2002 version is available from the GPL track database. The Nürburgring 2002 Int ADAC 24h-Rennen circuit still includes the South Curve but the graphics are up to date. Used with the 1965 mod (which makes the cars much easier to drift and more forgiving to drive) this is an excellent game and well worth trying is you want to experience how the true long circuit races like Spa and Clermont Ferrand were.

A similar track layout is available for GT Legends from NoGrip. Various versions are available, but the best is Nordschleife 2006 which includes 3 layouts, the 'Tourist' layout being the present day circuit usually open to the public. The game has the benefit of modern, commercial game-based handling, albeit for older cars; great fun sliding a Mk1 Cortina round. There is also a 'Winter Mother' based on the older GPL version of the circuit which gives you lots of ice and snow to slide around on.

As a novelty there is also a 'Nuerburg Village' circuit available on NoGrip which contains a small section of the public road from the 'Ring roundabout towards Nurburg, before delving off into a fantasy circuit up through the castle.

GTR2, rFactor and Race07 are other newish games which have track downloads for the Nordschleife so there is a version around somewhere which should please just about everybody.

Check out the NoGrip site for numerous other track downloads. Most of the best UK club circuits are there, handy for trackdays, as well as international road and track venues.

The venerable SportsCar GT also has a version of the Ring, complete with the car park and the entrance barriers. You will also need to download a patch or two for the game. Unfortunately the best download sites seem now to have disappeared but have a look at our SCGT page for more information on the game.

There is also a version for Racer and you can get the track from RSCnet. The game has to be downloaded and needs a decent OpenGL graphics card. As it's designed to be networked muliplayer there is very crude AI. Interesting concept though and worth a try, but be prepared for a few bugs as it's still in development. But you do get to drive round the car park if you want to! You can't actually go into the café and get a coffee yet, though.

Nascar 2003 from Papyrus has a version of the Nordschleife, albeit with the old South Curve section. The artificial intelligence of the computer cars is a bit suspect and they do some weird things, but quite entertaining. And GTR has a version, again based on the old GPL track, but more modern versions are available to download..

Gran Turismo 4 on the Playstation2 has a good rendition of the present day 'Ring but the graphics are a bit 1990's and you can't drive round the car park! This one will probably work a lot better on the new PS3 or whatever ..
